Writing this really feels like I’m back in the classroom writing a paper for English. Where’s the catchy introduction? What does the rubric say? But I’m NOT IN SCHOOL, and that is an admittedly great feeling.
After high school, lots of people wonder about college. A lot of my classmates went right off to college after we graduated. But then there was me, and I debated for a long time on whether or not I wanted to go to college at all, but I promised my mom I would go so I will… eventually.
In the meantime, I decided to go on the World Race- a very exciting opportunity you can read about under the “What is the World Race?” tab to your left. Many people have asked why I’ve chosen this path, what led me to it, what will I be doing, etc. And here I am to answer all those questions!
1. How did you find out about the World Race?
There was a link to the World Race website on my school’s website, and I clicked it and read about it and decided that it was a cool opportunity. I didn’t think much more of it until sophomore year, but after that, I literally planned my next three years of high school (and the next couple years after) around the idea that I was going.
2. Why did you choose this?
I’ve always had a sense of wanderlust. I grew up in Colorado. Knowing the same streets your whole life might be fine with other people, but I want to get out and travel and make a difference in the world. When I started high school in 2016 I got close to the Lord and he told me one day in my sophomore year that he wanted me to go on the race.
So I said “Okay!” rather enthusiastically, and here we are! Since that time, he’s expanded my view to go from just ‘travelling’ to ‘being the hands and feet of Jesus’ and I have to admit I’m reallyexcited for that part, perhaps more than the travelling!
There have been other confirmations that he wants me to take this journey, but I think I’m going to put those stories in another post.
3. Where are you going?
Originally I was going to go to Romania, India, and Costa Rica, but because of COVID-19 sweeping the world, many countries have closed their borders until 2021. I don’t know the new route yet, but as soon as I do I’ll write to you all about it. In the meantime, starting in September, I’ll be staying in Gainesville, Georgia with my team until we launch in January.
4. What will you be doing on the Race?
Lots of things! Since my team and I will be staying in Georgia for 3.5 months, we’ll learn how to evangelize, minister, tell stories, build better and stronger relationships, as well as get a good view on the cultures we’ll be visiting come January. Normally, this would take place in a two-week training camp before we leave America, but I think the Lord has played it out so I could spend more time learning these important things to better prepare me for the future he’s got planned for me.
On the field, we’ll be church planting, ministering, taking care of kids, doing construction work, teaching English, doing VBS, evangelism outreach, and praying for the sick among many other things I probably have no idea about yet.
5. What can I do for you?
The thing I need most is prayer. Pray that I stay on the path the Lord has set for me, and that I continue to listen to him, as well as that I trust in him more cause that’s been a big struggle for me. If you’d like to do more, you can click that orange donate button at the top there.
If anyone has more questions, click on the ‘Contact Me’ page. There you can type into the box and I’ll try and get back to you within a few days.
That’s all for now! I already have some ideas for other posts, so watch for those as well.
In Him,
Sophia
